The Old Man is tanned deep from always being outside, his body is worn down, but his eyes are as cheerful as a kids in a candy shop. Santiago was made fun of by the younger fishermen. They would come in with big fish, and many of them. The older fishermen, who knew Santiago, they would only pat him on the back and encourage him. The Old Man is out of luck. Since fishing is more about luck, he thinks he is out and he will soon get more. Though Santiago is a very smart fisherman, he has gone almost three months without a fish. His wife has also died. The Old Man misses his wife very much and he is lonely. The boy helps the Old Man with his loneliness, but he can not replace the women he loved.
